Dry Fly Fishing in Rivers

Fly Fishing in Rivers

When it comes to fly fishing in small rivers, many anglers remember the success of their dry fly fishing. The action on the surface, and that jump after setting the hook, makes a pleasure. Dry fly fishing in a river happens in two main moments.

The first one is the hatch of mayfly and caddis flies that Trout eagerly come up to the surface and take them.  May flies are a large amount of Trout feeding in the water. Generally, Trout feeds on the surface at two stages of Mayfly life cycle. The first one is the hatch time that Nymph hatches out and floats into the surface until it can fly away. The other moment is when Males and females mate in the air and after that females will come back to the surface to lay their eggs in the water. After laying their eggs they float on the surface with their wings outstretched. They are then called spinner. Most Spinners have red body and long tails.

Tip: When you see Mayfly laying their eggs you can try spinners downstream at the same size.

If you do not know the hatch and can not match the hatch at this stage, try an olive body dry fly. Most may flied such as dune, have olive body during the hatch. When you are fishing in small rivers during the mayfly hatch keep in mind that you should avoid seeing by trout, because you are more likely to be seen at this stage.

The second moment is when terrestrials fall into the water. Always make sure to have red ant and black ant when fishing in small rivers. Other terrestrials such as grasshoppers can be great at this stage. Grasshoppers are likely to fall into the water when it is windy. If you are seeking big trout in autumn do no not forget these grasshoppers at all. They are more likely to fall into the water at this time.

Tip: Just keep your eyes open. See what’s happening around you. Is there any terrestrial near you, likely to fall into the water?

  Dry Fly Presentation

When you are going to fish on dry fly, you have chosen the most exciting method as the action is really visual and you are more likely to be seen when trout come to the surface. So, it needs really experience and technique. However, the most important factor is presentation. Presentation is not just good casting. It is combination of techniques before and during fly fishing. Before fly fishing returns to your tackle. You can not fish with a #9 fly line using tiny flies such as a #22 Adams. Therefore you should be ready for the good presentation before you come to the river. Your fly rod also should match your fly line. When you are through with your fly fishing tackle then you are through with before fishing techniques.

Now it is time to fly fish! Presentation in the water means your fly should be landed as gently as possible. Your fly casting is important and should have the least disturbance on the surface. You should learn all casting methods, such as overhead casts, roll cats, etc.

But there is one thing from your tackle that you need to use while fishing and that is surely the floatant you use. Floatants are found in two forms, spray and gel. You should apply good floatant to the fly so that the fly can better float on the surface. These floatants prevent the fly from sinking under the surface and help you have a better presentation.
